Sister Milda Avila
As a young adult, Sister Milda Avila emigrated from her home in the Azores Islands of Portugal to the United States with her entire family. She has been a Sister of St. Joseph of Corondelet for over 45 years. During this time, she has served as a Minister’s Administrative Assistant and the Administrator of a retirement home in Salinas. She spent many years in the Church as a Pastoral Associate, directing liturgy, R.C.I.A. (The Right of Christian Initiation of Adults) and faith formation. For the past year, Sister Milda has been on sabbatical exploring her next chapter while volunteering at the Women’s Jail in Los Angeles. After much reflection and discernment, she felt a new call in her vocation to go and serve people in a different capacity than she had previously in the Church. She refers to her role as In-Custody Chaplain with Restorative Partners as a call within a call. Sister Milda not only brings a lifetime of spiritual guidance to our chaplaincy, but also has her B.A. in Social Work from San Jose State University and speaks fluent Portuguese and English--as well as a little Spanish in her Portuguese accent!
