Cultural Studies at Juvenile Hall
June 17th, 2015
We would like to thank fourth year Cal Poly student Claire Shannon for her initiative in offering a Cultural Studies program to our Juvenile Hall youth! In January, Claire proposed the idea of a program that would examine the ways in which culture, identity, and upbringing influence the diverse ways we think about ourselves and about our world. The program was designed to foster open-mindedness, understanding, and an expanded worldview for all participants. With the help of Cal Poly student Sophia Del Bianco, Claire planned a 10-week curriculum that examined issues like the nature vs. nurture debate, collectivistic and individualistic cultures, ethnocentrism and stereotypes. Since its launch in March, Cultural Studies has been a great experience for Claire and a valuable, eye-opening educational experience for our Juvenile Hall youth. On May 4th, Claire invited Cal Poly Professor Jnan Blau to present as guest lecture on astrology from a cultural perspective. The youth were still talking about it for days afterwards. We are very excited to be able to provide this program to our youth in custody!
